Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 2025
We built Medical Bill Explained to help people understand their medical bills. Here's how we handle your data — in plain English.
We Don't Store Your Bills
When you upload a medical bill, we process it in real-time and don't save it anywhere on our servers. Once your analysis is complete, your bill image or PDF is gone. We have no database of user bills, and we couldn't retrieve your bill even if we wanted to.
How AI Processing Works
We use OpenAI's API to analyze your bills. When you upload a bill, it's sent to OpenAI for processing. According to OpenAI's data retention policy, API inputs may be retained for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring, after which they're deleted. OpenAI does not use API data to train their models.
You can learn more about OpenAI's data practices in their privacy policy.
Analytics We Collect
We use PostHog to understand how people use our tool so we can improve it. We collect anonymous usage data like:
- Which features are used most
- Where users encounter errors
- General device and browser information
- Whether the analysis was helpful (if you click the feedback buttons)
We do not collect or store the contents of your bills in our analytics. Text on your bills is masked before any analytics data is recorded.
No User Accounts
We don't require you to create an account or provide any personal information to use this tool. There's no login, no email collection, and no way for us to identify you personally.
Educational Tool Disclaimer
Medical Bill Explained is an educational tool designed to help you better understand your medical bills. It is not a substitute for professional medical, legal, or financial advice. The analysis we provide is informational only — always verify important information with your healthcare provider and insurance company.
